March 2007: Canadian
National Buys Shortline . On December 1st, Canadian National
announced that it had purchased Savage Alberta Railway, Inc. (SAR), a
345-mile short-line, from Savage Companies for $25 million. SAR connects
with CN at Swan Landing, Alberta, about 40 miles east of Jasper, Alberta and
runs north to Grande Prairie. Two branches run out of Grande Prairie. CN
sold this line to another short-line operator about eight years ago.
Locomotive Notes … Athabasca Northern Railway has leased a
pair of ex-Canadian Pacific SD40-2s (5607 and 5665) from National Railway
Equipment … Quebec-Gatineau Railway has acquired ex-Canadian National
GP40-2W 9404 from Progress Rail and will number it 3016 ... A pair of
Cartier Railway AC4400CWs (17 and 18) were damaged on October 6th, when they
crashed into the ore unloader at Port Cartier, Quebec, and will likely be
retired.
April 2007: Shorts … Trillium Rail is currently operating with former Canadian National MLW S-13's 108 and 110. They run two jobs a day, Monday through Friday from their yard at Feeder West, Ontario … St. Thomas & Eastern currently runs twice a week but completion of an ethanol plant under construction in Alymer, Ontario, should revise their schedule to a daily operation … Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is no longer owned by RailAmerica. The local ownership group has contracted Southern Railway of British Columbia for operations … Orangeville–Brampton Railway has added a fourth passenger car for excursion service, former Via Rail RDC-9 6006.
